Top 5 Great Themed Bars, Cafes and Restaurants in Bali

Unique and quirky themed dining spots in Bali

Bali has a growing number of themed bars and cafes. They offer a fun and unique drinking and dining experience on the island. Each of these bars, cafes and restaurants stand out in their own way and offer out-of-the-ordinary features. You can enjoy great coffee, meals or cocktails in wonderful interiors filled with quirky props. Curios range from chopped café racers and vintage bikes. Some feature rare arts and antique items that hark back to Edo-period Japan. Even their staff are clad in themed costumes, taking service to the next level.

Here we’ve compiled a mix of Bali’s coolest themed bars, cafes and restaurants which will get you hooked in a unique way. Most are great fun for dining families with kids. Some present staged cabarets and dress-ups, making the whole dining experience fun and captivating for little guests. Looking for a beachfront spot? There’s one with a stranded pirate ship. Another features a jet plane with a gutted cabin that’s revamped into a dining room. There’s even one for cat lovers.

1. Keramas Aero Park

You can find several ‘abandoned planes’ around Bali, but this decommissioned Boeing 737-400 overlooking rice paddies on Keramas Beach in Gianyar is one of the quirkiest restaurants on the island. It’s perched above a green lawn where table setups are also laid out. But, inside its cabin is a main dining hall, lined with dining tables and leather seats, with cool LED mood lighting throughout the aisles. A ‘boarding pass’ for different ‘flight classes’ is around IDR 250,000 (USD 18) for two, which presents a mix of local and international cuisine.

2. Trsavo Lion Restaurant

As the Bali Safari & Marine Park’s signature dining destination, the Tsavo Lion Restaurant lets you enjoy an African-themed dinner with international cuisine, all in the ‘company’ of live lions. The restaurant’s dining room is aptly decorated with safari-themed props, separated from the lions prowling right outside in their enclosures by floor-to-ceiling glass panels. Next to the lions, you can also spot the safari park’s meerkats and hippos. To better take in the African safari experience, you can also consider staying at the Mara River Safari Lodge, also located within the park.

3. Frankestein’s Laboratory

Frankenstein’s Laboratory is a uniquely macabre themed bar and restaurant on Seminyak’s Jalan Camplung Tanduk (Dhyana Pura Street). It offers a groovy ‘freak show’ cabaret every night, much inspired by Michael Jackson’s ‘Thriller’, together with dark-themed cocktails and light bites. Some of their quirky cocktails are served in IV bags! As diners, you can get into character with their zombie face paintings. Laboratory’s cabarets are hosted five times every night, with meet and greet sessions where you can take selfies with the scary performers. Its menu includes western staples like burgers and pizzas with prices starting at IDR 99,000 (USD 7.50).

4. Pirates Bay Bali

This is a peculiar landmark on the bay of Nusa Dua. Pirates Bay Bali is a pirate-themed open-air cafe and restaurant, where families can dine and have fun at a ‘stranded’ pirate’s ship overlooking the bay or high above in several bamboo tree houses. Scattered around the grounds are numerous castaway inspired setups such as thatch-roofed beach huts, bonfires, tents, and picket fences that are nods to Robinson Crusoe, Jack Sparrow and everything about pirates. The centrepiece is its pirate ship – a salvaged wooden boat that was reconstructed and decorated, complete with sails and blackjacks, great for holiday photos.

5. The Odd Cat Cafe

If you’re fond of cats and purring kitties, try this cute café on Kerobokan’s Jalan Raya Semer street. It might provide you with a remedy if you’ve left your beloved pet at home while you’re holidaying in Bali. The interiors are comfy, and feature wall motifs and interior décor that’s all about cats, with some of the well-kept felines freely playing around in the purpose-built obstacles and sleeping on patchwork rugs and in snug places. There’s no fee to enter, play with and show the kitties your love. Coffees, juices and light bites are reasonably priced (average IDR 120,000 or USD 9 for two).
